Amor de Mi Tierra Foundation is an NGO and private law nonprofit entity, whose scientific, technical and cultural activities and operations seek to achieve social and economic development.
The Foundation has contributed to the development and construction of trails throughout the Reserve that show the different Indigenous traces and different species of trees conserved in the Reserve to foster a culture of protecting the environment through adventure and nature tourism activities. The Amor De Mi Tierra Foundation has planted nurseries of natural plants such as the Caracoli tree. Additionally, recovering programs for the Mamancana water resources have been made through reforestation and by strengthening the top soil, necessary to allow for water emissions. The Amor De Mi Tierra Foundation has also created environmental committees and campaigns for conservation projects in the local community.
The tropical dry forest of Mamancana is one of the most threatened ecosystems in the tropics, and one of the least studied. Tropical dry forests in this region have been profoundly changed, and extensive deforestation has reached almost 100%. Since the 19th century, large areas have been transformed into savannah, with changes to the natural habitat. Today, we can find fragmented remnants where only 1% of the natural vegetation has survived. Mamancana Reserve and the management of the Amor De Mi Tierra Foundation are contributing to conservation efforts for the area.
Ornithological studies performed by ALPEC (Alianza Para Los Ecosistemas Críticos) have created, allowed prioritizingpriority birds conservation areas within the Colombian Caribbean region. The remnant dry forests were identified as key areas for with great potential for the conservation of migratory birds. The geographical location of these islands of natural habitiat make them a strategic station and refuge point for birds on their way towards the Andes and the east of the continent. This area is the first forest ecosystem that millions of migratory land birds find after the trip up the Colombian Caribbean coast.
